Sampras' slump continues

Pete Sampras slumped to a straight-sets defeat by MaliVai Washington yesterday, two days before beginning the defence of his Wimbledon title. His 7-5, 6-2 defeat in the Quintus Cup final at the Hurlingham Club in London follows his withdrawal from the Stella Artois Championships, citing physical and mental exhaustion after the death of his coach, Tim Gullikson. Germany's Anke Huber won her first grass-court title yesterday when she beat Helena Sukova of the Czech Republic in straight sets in the final of the Rosmalen women's tournament in Holland. The French Open champion, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, reached the final of the Halle grass-court tournament yesterday with victory over Daniel Vacek. He will face the Swedish qualifier Nicklas Kulti, who beat the American Richey Reneberg, in the final.
