FRANK McAVENNIE, the former West Ham and Aston Villa striker, yesterday committed himself to Celtic until at least the end of the season. The 33-year-old former international had the opportunity to move to a Hong Kong club, but has opted to remain at Parkhead and strive for an extension to his contract, which runs out at the end of the season.

'Frank has done fairly well,' Liam Brady, the Celtic manager, said. 'I believe he can still become sharper, but I am pleased that he is willing to stay here.' McAvennie is in the side for today's trip to Falkirk.

Rangers also have their problems: Richard Gough, Gary Stevens and Trevor Steven all miss the home game against Hearts - and all three are struggling for next week's European Champions' League tie at Club Bruges. Ian Durrant, Scott Nisbet, and Dale Gordon are the replacements.
