Walter Smith, the Rangers, manager facing an ever-lengthening casualty list, yesterday ruled out a return to Ibrox for the 31-year-old Hearts striker Maurice Johnston.

The Scottish champions, who were held to a 1-1 draw at bottom of the table Partick last week will seek to potect their 11-match unbeaten run at Falkirk today without Mark Hateley, Ally McCoist, Andy Goram, Basile Boli and Richard Gough while Gordon Durieis starting a two-match suspension.

Meanwhile Celtic, who have struggled at their temporary home recording just three Premier wins at Hampden Park all season, have been hit by a flu virus, with six players ruled out of today's game against Kilmarnock.

Aberdeen, though, are expected to welcome back Scotland international Eoin Jess for their home match against Partick.
