Slough shut out
Slough's visit to Amiens ended in disappointment when they were beaten 5-4 by Campo Madrid in the play-off for the bronze medal at the women's European Indoor Club Championship, writes Bill Colwill.
With a hat-trick from Jane Smith and a fourth goal from Sarah Kelleher, Slough were leading 4-2 five minutes into the second half before the faster, more direct Spaniards took control of the game. Maider Telleria collected her third goal of the game with just three minutes remaining to take the medal.
Earlier Slough had been beaten 6-4 by Russelsheim in the semi-finals. Britta Becker converted five penalty corners for the defending champions in a game in which Karen Brown missed out twice at penalty strokes.
In an exciting all-German final, Russelsheim beat Berliner 7-6 to retain their title. Edinburgh won the B Division final in Brescia, Italy, 6-3 against Groningen from the Netherlands.
At home Slough, although with a game in hand, lost first place to Ipswich in the Premier Division of the women's National League. Ipswich came from behind to beat Hightown 6-1 in an emphatic victory, with six players getting their names on the scoresheet.
