Cliff Thorburn's bad start to the new season continued in Blackpool yesterday with a defeat in the final qualifying round of the Skoda Grand Prix. The Canadian, world champion in 1980, lost 5-3 to Matt Wilson, who now meets Ken Doherty in the first round proper in Sunderland next month. Ireland's Michael Duffy, who overcame Alex Higgins 5-1 in the Thailand Classic qualifier on Saturday, maintained his fine form by beating Paul McPhillips 5-0. Higgins was beaten 5-1 by the South African Silvino Francisco while another former world champion, Doug Mountjoy, advanced by beating Tony Meo 5-3.
