The most miserable season of Cliff Thorburn's 23-year professional career came to a premature end at Blackpool yesterday with his elimination from the Embassy World Championship qualifying. Thorburn, winner of the title in 1980, was beaten 10-3 by Cardiff's Paul Davies in the eighth qualifying round.
