Snooker impresario Barry Hearn has offered to mediate in the row between rival factions within the sport about its future. The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, the game's governing body, has come under fire from world No 1 Stephen Hendry's manager, Ian Doyle.

John Higgins has narrowed the gap on world No 1 Stephen Hendry after his success in the European Open. Hendry lost in the quarter-finals to James Wattana, but remains clear leader in the world list. Ronnie O'Sullivan's first-round loss at the European Open relegates him to fourth.

LATEST RANKINGS (GB unless stated): 1 S Hendry, 2 J Higgins, 3 J Parrott, 4 R O'Sullivan, 5 M J Williams, 6 K Doherty, 7 P Ebdon, 8 N Bond, 9 T Drago (Malta), 10 A McManus.
