Cliff Thorburn, the former world champion, lived up to his reputation as one of the hardest battlers in the game yesterday when he advanced to the final qualifying round of the European Open in Blackpool. Thorburn took five hours and 28 minutes - including a 73-minute frame - to beat Wayne Jones, the Welsh player, 5-3.
