Spartak Moscow, who beat Blackburn in their opening Champions' League Group B match, survived a pounding in the last 10 minutes to beat Legia Warsaw 2-1 in Moscow yesterday. Yuri Nikiforov put Spartak ahead with a 14th-minute penalty after Legia's Jacek Bednarz fouled Sergei Yuran, who scored Spartak's winner at Ewood Park. Yuran added the second in the 54th minute to put Spartak on course for the quarter-finals.

Legia launched a spirited fightback but only reduced the arrears five minutes from time through a header by defender Marek Jozwiak.

Alessandro Del Piero, a 20-year-old replacement for Roberto Baggio at Juventus, set up one goal and scored another as the Italians maintained their perfect record in Group C with a 3-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest, who beat Rangers two weeks ago.

Denmark's Aalborg, making their first appearance in Group A after replacing the disgraced Dynamo Kiev, were beaten 2-0 away by Porto, for whom Rui Barros scored both goals.
