BUTCH REYNOLDS, the world 400 metres record-holder, awarded dollars 27.3 (pounds 18m) in damages against the International Amateur Athletic Federation by an Ohio court, said he would return to competition despite IAAF threats to counter-sue or take further disciplinary action against him.

KEVIN YOUNG, the Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion, has won the Jesse Owens Award as the US athlete of the year. In votes cast by officials, athletes and the Press, Young received 1,751 points to defeat the Olympic 400m champion, Quincy Watts (1,523), and Carl Lewis (1,138).
