RYNE SANDBERG, the Chicago Cubs second baseman who is the sport's highest paid player, suffered a broken hand in Mesa, California, in the fourth innings of a spring training exhibition game against San Francisco. Sandberg, who has recently signed a four-year, pounds 20m contract, could be out for up to six weeks and will probably miss the opening day of the new season on 5 April.
