DIPAK PATEL, the former Worcestershire off-spinner, took 5 for 54 from 27 overs on the first day of New Zealand's three-day match against Zimbabwe B in Harare. After the home side declared at 246 for 8, the tourists' openers, Blair Hartland and Mark Greatbatch, put on 43 without being separated.

ZIMBABWE, the latest country to be awarded full Test-match status, have accepted an invitation to play in next summer's 107th Scarborough Festival. Their brief visit will include a three-day match in early September against a President's invitation team likely to contain several members of the Australian Ashes tour party.
