DETLEF HOFMANN, the double world champion, was left out of Germany's canoeing team for the Barcelona Olympics despite taking out a court injunction to circumvent a ban for drugs offences and have his name put forward for selection. The German canoeing federation obeyed the ruling and submitted Hofmann's name, but he was rejected by the national olympic committee because he had taken anabolic steroids. Astrid Strauss, a German swimmer who has also been banned for using steroids, won a similar court order yesterday, but the NOC is expected to treat her in the same way.
