WILLIE WADDELL, the former Rangers and Kilmarnock manager, has died of a heart attack at the age of 71. Waddell made his name as a winger with Rangers and later became the Ibrox club's manager.

CLAUDIO TAFFAREL, Parma's Brazilian goalkeeper, was yesterday suspended for one game by the Italian football association's disciplinary commission, for arguing with the referee during the Lazio v Parma game which Parma lost 5-2. The Italian tribunal also fined Napoli 15m lire ( pounds 6,600) after their fans hurled objects at the Brazilian defender, Julio Cesar, who was being taken off the field on a stretcher after breaking his right leg during a recent game.

NAPOLI said yesterday that the transfer of Diego Maradona to Seville was 'null and void' because no payment had been made.

SOUTHAMPTON yesterday placed David Speedie, their midfielder who signed from Blackburn three months ago, on the transfer-list.

CHRIS KAMARA, the experienced Luton Town midfielder, who moved from Leeds United last season, asked for a transfer yesterday, saying he was keen to switch to a club closer to his Yorkshire home.

SUNDERLAND yesterday announced plans for a new pounds 50m, 48,000-capacity stadium, saying that it 'won't cost us a penny'. Planning permission has been granted to develop a 120-acre out-of-town site.
