Nigel Mansell was denied pole position by Emerson Fittipaldi for today's IndyCar race in Portland, Oregon, with less than one minute remaining in the opening round of qualifying. The Indianapolis 500 winner, driving a Chevrolet- powered Penske, produced a fast lap of 115.069 mph to relegate Mansell's Lola- Ford Cosworth to second at 114.739.
