Sport in short: Olympic Games

KEVAN GOSPER, the International Olympic Committee vice-president, said there had been a shift of opinion among members of the executive board away from including golf at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Reasons cited were the lack of a single world governing body contravening the Olympic charter, the impact of including high-profile professional sports and problems with finding a suitable venue.

BORIS YELTSIN, the Russian President, has been awarded the Olympic Gold Order by the IOC in recognition of his help in ensuring that the former Soviet republics competed as a Unified Team in Barcelona.
