SOCHI, a Black Sea port at the foot of the Bolshoi Kavkaz mountain range, is bidding to host the 2002 Winter Olympics and is being backed by the Russian Olympic Committee. Sochi had an application for the 1998 Games rejected because of a lack of financial guarantees from the government of the former Soviet Union.
