TASHKENT, capital of the former Soviet republic Uzbekistan, has withdrawn its bid to host the Olympics in the year 2000, leaving seven cities in the running: Peking, Sydney, Istanbul, Manchester, Milan, Brasilia, and Berlin.

THE Japanese company Brother Industries Ltd have become the second sponsor of the 1992 Olympics to end its connection with the games. Philips pulled out last month.
