Sport in Short: Rallying

CARLOS SAINZ, the new world champion, has signed for the Italian team, Lancia, for next season after failing to sort out a sponsorship problem with Toyota. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who clinched his second world title after last week's win in the Lombard RAC Rally, said the split was amicable. 'There were no problems with breaking Toyota's contract although I was sad not to be able to continue a four-year-old relationship,' Sainz said. Juha Kankkunen, of Finland, last year's world champion, is expected to sign for Toyota.
