Sport in short: Rugby League

THE Sports Council yesterday accused the Rugby Football League of being reluctant to sort out their differences with the amateur association about who should control the youth game.

SALFORD, nicknamed the Red Devils, cited their image as a family club when they turned down a pounds 1m sponsorship offer from a satellite television company who broadcast an adult channel called Red Hot Dutch. 'We didn't feel the product was the right one to promote,' David Tarry, the club's chief executive, said.

PHIL McKENZIE, the Widnes' Australian hooker, has been signed on a month's loan by Rochdale Hornets, the club he first joined after arriving in England during the 1985-86 season.
