EDDIE WARDEN-OWEN, of Britain, suffered a shock defeat in the Gold Cup in Bermuda. Warden-Owen, ranked seventh in the world, lost to Ry Heiner, of the Netherlands, when he failed to finish the Hamilton course after the boom on his boat broke. In another upset, the world match-racing champion Russell Coutts, from New Zealand, was beaten by Bermuda's Peter Bromby.

GOLD CUP (Hamilton, Bermuda): Quarter-finals: C Dickson (NZ) bt J Diesch (Ger) 45sec; P Cayard (US) bt E Baird (US) 13sec; R Heiner (Neth) bt E Warden-Owen (GB) did not finish; P Bromby (Berm) bt R Coutts (NZ) 25sec.
