JOHANN-OLAV KOSS, of Norway, yesterday broke his own 5,000 metres world record with a time of 6min 38.77sec at the European championships at Heerenveen, the Netherlands.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (Heerenveen, Neth): Men 500m: 1 F Zandstra (Neth) 37.90sec; 2 R Sighel (It) 37.95; 3 R Ritsma (Neth) 38.00. 5,000m: 1 J-O Koss 6min 38.77sec (world record); 2 Zandstra 6:40.01; 3 B Veldkamp (Neth) 6:41.86. Overall (after two events): 1 Zandstra 77.901pts; 2 Koss 78.167; 3 Ritsma 78.361. Women 500m: 1 E Hunyady (Aut) 40.86; 2 E-R Yttredal (Nor) 41.51; 3 C Hordobetiu (Rom) 41.59.
