LEROY WALKER, 74, was elected as the 23rd president of the United States Olympic Committee yesterday. Walker, the first black president, has been critical of the increasing professionalisation of the Olympics, especially the American basketball team. He said the decision to allow professionals to represent the United States in Barcelona meant some talented college players were overlooked and that he intends to ensure that all athletes - including amateurs - have an equal opportunity for selection.
