KELLY SLATER, the American who heads the world championship standings, was beaten by his compatriot, the former world champion, Tom Curren, in the first round of the Quiksilver Surf Masters, in Biarritz, but won his repechage heat to stay in the tournament. Martin Potter, Britain's 1989 world champion, also won a repechage to advance to the third round.
