BRITAIN'S Chris Bailey caused a surprise when he beat Martin Strelba, the No 3 seed from the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round in the ATP Challenger tournament in Garmisch, Germany yesterday.

MARK PETCHEY, the top seed, cruised into the quarter-finals of the LTA Satellite Masters in Coventry yesterday after a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lincoln's Andrew Richardson. Petchey, whose satellite tournament success consists of a semi-final, a final and a singles title during the past three weeks, is on course to achieve a possible 49 computer points out of a maximum 50 should he win Friday's final.

TRACY AUSTIN, who last week played her first singles tournament since 1989, will continue her comeback by competing in World Team Tennis this summer. The WTT said the 30-year-old former US Open champion will play for the Raleigh Edge, one of 12 teams in the league. Austin played for the WTT's New Jersey Stars in 1989. Last week Austin advanced to the third round of the Evert Cup, beating Rennae Stubbs and the world No 12, Katerina Maleeva, marking her first competitive singles event since 1989, when her attempt at a comeback was halted by a car accident. Austin, who at age 16 became the youngest US Open winner in 1979, will be joined on the WTT circuit by Bjorn Borg (Los Angeles), Jimmy Connors (Phoenix), Martina Navratilova (Atlanta) and Mats Wilander (New Jersey).
