JEREMY BATES, Britain's No 1, was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by Todd Martin of the United States in the first round of the Canadian Open in Toronto on Monday.

BJORN BORG, the five-times Wimbledon champion, beat the 39-year-old Guillermo Vilas of Argentina 6-1, 6-3 in an exhibition match which concluded the Pathmark Classic in Mahwah, New Jersey, on Monday. The two were meeting for the first time since the 1980 Nations Cup.
