PROSPECTS of Formula One becoming something more than a procession this year took a turn for the better when Michael Schumacher won the first grand prix of the season, in Brazil. Pushing too hard to match the German, Ayrton Senna spun off the track.

Manchester United's treble aspirations met a similar fate as Aston Villa prevailed 3-1 in the Coca-Cola Cup final at Wembley. United's Ukrainian winger, Andrei Kanchelskis, compounded their disappointment when he was sent off for hand- ball in the dying minutes - their fourth red card in a fortnight.

The most spectacular crash of the week, though, came in Port of Spain, Trinidad. England's cricketers, needing 194 to beat the West Indies in the third Test, were bowled out for 46, Curtly Ambrose taking 6-24. It was England's lowest Test score since the 1886-87 tour to Australia.
