There was claret spilled at West Ham United, with the manager Billy Bonds quitting the Premiership club after 27 years. The united colours of Benetton were in disarray as FIA, the world governing body, rejected their claims over a missing fuel filter. Rugby union's mandarins were in a blue funk over the inexorable spread of professionalism in the game.
