Chelsea crawl a little further from the threat of relegation by beating Newcastle United 1-0.

The Professional Footballers' Association confirms it is instigating a dressing-room poster campaign to eradicate the use of raised elbows as the Tottenham Hotspur captain, Gary Mabbutt, recovering from a smashed face after a collision with John Fashanu's elbow, receives an MBE.

In South Africa, the England A cricket team make it eight wins from eight starts with their 10-wicket victory over Western Province, while in Australia, the first Test between the hosts and South Africa since 1970 fizzles out into a draw when rain intervenes. Mark Taylor, the Australian opener, scores 170 to become the first player to score a century on his debut against four countries. It was also his highest score in a home Test.

Andy Platt, the Wigan rugby league player, decides to finish his career in Australia's Winfield Cup with the new team, Auckland Warriors. The 29-year-old Great Britain prop says it is the challenge and not the money that is taking him to the southern hemisphere.
