LENNOX LEWIS is sent tumbling to the canvas by the unheralded Oliver McCall after 31 seconds of the second round of their WBC title bout. Result: he becomes Britain's only former world heavyweight champion this century.

Damon Hill is knocked about, too. But after rolling his Williams-Renault in qualifying for the Portugese Grand Prix, the British driver dusts himself off to win at Estoril and moves to within one point of the title leader, Michael Schumacher, with three races remaining in the Formula One world championship.

The lure of lucre proves too much to resist for Scott Quinnell who becomes the latest of Wales's rugby union talents to switch codes. He joins Wigan in a deal believed to be worth pounds 400,000 over four years.

Blackburn Rovers, awash with the finest talents money can buy, are knocked out of the Uefa Cup by the Swedish part-timers, Trelleborgs FF. As Arsenal, Chelsea and a rampant Newcastle progress - and Manchester United emerge from their Istanbul hell against Galatasaray unscathed - Aston Villa unseat the Uefa Cup holders, Internazionale.
