Peter Knowles, the reigning men's singles champion, has withdrawn from the Liverpool Victoria English National Championships, which begin at the Dolphin Leisure Centre in Haywards Heath tomorrow. The 28-year-old Kent player injured his right ankle in training. Tanya Woodward, the 1996 winner seeded second in the women's singles, has also withdrawn with a swollen knee.
