Former UK champion Gary Smith, battling to retain his world Top 16 ranking got a much needed boost today when he won through to the second round of the BUPA Care Homes Open with a 7-3 7-6 win over the Australian Ian Taylor. Graham Robertson, the world No 8, needed just 10 ends to wrap up a 7-3 7-0 win over the Welsh international Robert Weale.
