PAUL HODKINSON'S WBC featherweight championship defence against Goya Vargas, of Mexico, in Dublin today will go ahead after Vargas signed a previously agreed one-fight option with the promoter, Barney Eastwood.

ROBBIE REGAN, of Wales, has been voted the European Boxing Union's Champion of the Year a few days after giving up his flyweight title in order to fight Scotland's WBO champion Pat Clinton. Henry Wharton has also handed back his British title to concentrate on a WBC super-middleweight championship challenge against Nigel Benn later this year.

ALEXANDER KOSTADINOV, an 18-year- old bantamweight, has died in hospital from brain damage after being knocked out in an amateur bout in the national junior championships in Sliven, Bulgaria.
