Chris Adams, the Sussex captain, could see out his career at the club after he was offered a new six-year contract. Tony Pigott, the club's chief executive, said: "It's not just the club that wants to sign him up, he is very keen as well. We have made him an offer and it's up to him to come back."

Mark Taylor, the recently retired Australian Test captain, made an inauspicious return to Sheffield Shield action yesterday, making just nine runs for New South Wales against Queensland. His dismissal triggered a collapse by the NSW batsmen as they were all out for 106 on the first day of their four-day game. In reply Queensland also struggled, closing the day on 159 for 7.
