Hampshire are looking for a new overseas player after deciding not to retain the West Indian fast bowler Nixon McLean next season. McLean, signed as a replacement for the Australian Michael Kasprowicz, is not having his contract renewed despite taking more than 100 first-class wickets in the last two seasons. Hampshire have also released the batsman Matthew Keech and the pace bowlers Steve Lugsden and Thomas Hansen while the all- rounder Kevan James, 38, has retired. The county have offered contracts to the teenagers Lawrence Prittipaul, James Adams and Iain Brunnschweiler, a Southampton-born wicketkeeper of Swiss ancestry.
