Bobby Simpson, the former Australian captain, has been appointed technical consultant to the Indian national squad until the World Cup in 1999.

An unbeaten 32 in just over four hours from Durham's Michael Gough enabled England to scrape a draw on the final day in the First Under-19 Test against South Africa in Cape Town after they had collapsed from 176 for 3 at lunch to 256 all out 20 minutes before stumps. South Africa were then left with only two overs in which to score the 39 needed to win and, despite a six off the first ball of the innings by Murray Creed, they could not manage it.
