NEW SOUTH WALES, the defending champions, beat Tasmania to retain the Sheffield Shield title and complete their second successive double in the Australian game. New South Wales's 42nd Shield title, their sixth in the past 12 years, followed their victory in the Mercantile Mutual limited overs competition two weeks ago.

SHEFFIELD SHIELD FINAL (Sydney, final of five days): Tasmania 255 and 126 (P Alley 5-24); New South Wales 442. New South Wales won by an innings and 61 runs.

TIM TREMLETT, the Hampshire coach, raised pounds 110,641 from his benefit last season.
