SHEFFIELD UNITED are to pay Rotherham pounds 75,000 for the goalkeeper Billy Mercer but could end up having to pay more than twice that amount because of built-in extras arrived at by a tribunal. It also decided that Stockport must pay Stoke pounds 15,000 for midfielder Paul Ware, plus a further pounds 5,000 after 25 appearances, pounds 10,000 after 50, and 10 per cent of any future profit on the player.

DIEGO MARADONA made a losing start to his new career as a coach when Deportivo Mandiyu lost 2-1 at home to Rosario Central.
