MEL MACHIN, the former Norwich, Manchester City and Barnsley manager, is the new manager of AFC Bournemouth. Machin, 49 is a former player and coach at Dean Court.

MOTHERWELL's Uefa Cup first- round ties with Borussia Dortmund will both be screened live by German television; the second leg at Fir Park has been switched to Wednesday 28 September at 3.30pm.

UEFA has suspended a Dynamo Minsk player, Valentin Belkevich, for a year following a positive drugs test after a Uefa Cup preliminary round match against Hibernian of Malta last month. Minsk's 6-5 aggregate win stands.

SERGEI YURAN, the Russian World Cup striker, and his compatriot, Vassily Kulkov, have signed one-year contracts with the Portuguese side, Porto, yesterday. Both were transfered from Benfica, the league champions, who found they had too many foreign players at the start of the season.

The Santos coach, Serginho, has been banned from the touchline for 180 days for kicking the director of a rival club in the groin. Serginho, who played for Brazil in the 1982 World Cup, has also been charged with assault by police and released on bail following the latest of a series of incidents in a turbulent career.
