ALLAN GUNN has announced that this year will be his last as a top football referee. Gunn, 50, is two years over the official retirement age for League referees but has been kept on by the league because of his fine reputation.

FAMALICAO, the Portuguese First Division side, have sacked their trainer, Jose Soares, after a poor start to the season. His replacement has not yet been named. Last month Belenenses fired their Brazilian coach, Abel Braga, for the same reason.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY are giving a trial to the Italian Giuseppe Morisco as they seek a replacement for the unsettled Swedish defender, Roland Nilsson.
