Jose Maria Olazabal was yesterday confirmed as a starter in Australia's richest golf tournament, next month's pounds 640,000 Vines Classic in Perth. Olazabal, who finished ninth on this year's European Order of Merit, joins Welshman Ian Woosnam, Ireland's Padraig Harrington, the South African pair Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, German Bernhard Langer, American Scott Hoch and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn in the tournament which takes place from 29 January-1 February.

An impressive six-under-par 66 by Andy Crerar yesterday put Scotland on track to win the Johnnie Walker PGA of Europe Team Championship for the fifth time in seven years. The defending champions took a six-stroke lead on the second day at Atalaya Park after David Thomson added a 70 for a combined eight-under par on the day.
