PAUL HOAD, of Britain, failed by one shot to qualify for The Open next month as five Japanese golfers sealed their places for the tournament at Sandwich at the Asian-Japanese qualifiers in Hakui, Japan, yesterday. Hoad finished the two-round qualifying contest on 141, one shot behind Katsuyoshi Tomori and Noboru Sugai. Yoshinori Mizumaki led the qualifiers on 137, with Takaaki Fukuzawa on 138 and Ryoken Kawagishi on 139.
