ENGLAND'S women beat South African 1-0 at Bisham Abbey yesterday in their last game before next week's World Cup in Dublin. Kath Johnson's penalty stroke in the 29th minute separated the two teams in a game which left a doubt over England's finishing capability.

JOHN SHAW, the England captain, goes into Reading hospital today for an exploratory operation on a knee he injured three weeks ago. The operation will be performed by Richard Dodds, a former England captain and Olympic gold medallist.
