Pat LaFontaine, the highest scoring American-born centre in NHL history, announced his retirement from hockey yesterday after being told he risked brain damage by continuing after suffering six major concussions in his 15-year career. LaFontaine, 33, amassed 468 goals and 545 assists for 1,013 points in 1,056 games with the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers.

Defenceman Jim Mathieson has returned to the Newcastle Riverkings from the Nottingham Panthers.
