AMERICAN ice hockey professionals will compete at the Winter Olympics for the first time. Gary Bettman, National Hockey League chief and Rene Fasel, International Federation president, signed an agreement which will allow the top US players to compete in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. Under the agreement, the NHL will stop for eight days during the Games, freeing players to represent their country.
