JUHA KANKKUNEN, the world champion, took a clear lead on the first day of the Safari Rally in Kenya after his Toyota team-mate and the early leader, Didier Auriol of France, lost more than an hour through suspension trouble. The Finnish driver, three times a winner of this event, opened up a six-minute lead over second-placed Ian Duncan, of Kenya, also driving a Toyota.
