The prospect of a British League next season moved a step closer after the Scottish Rugby Union gave their unequivocal backing to the proposals. The Gloucester owner Tom Walkinshaw is believed to have negotiated backing of pounds 16m for a 10-club league that will comprise of 10 Premiership teams from England, four from Wales and the two districts from Scotland.

Gary Armstrong is unlikely to play again before Christmas after fracturing his collar bone during Newcastle's Allied Dunbar Premiership match at Wasps on Saturday night.
