Franziska van Almsick, the world 200 metres champion, returned to competition in disappointing fashion yesterday, failing to qualify for the 100m freestyle relay in next year's world championships. The 19-year-old Van Almsick, swimming in her first major event since sustaining severe hand injuries in a motorcycle accident last May, was sixth in 57.16sec in the 100m freestyle at the German trials in Regensburg.
