Matthew Syed, the England champion, stunned the world No 11 Peter Karlsson, of Sweden, at the Australian Open in Melbourne with a 13-21, 19-21, 21- 16, 21-7, 21-14, victory. Syed, 33rd in the world, went out in the next round, beaten in three games by Kalin Kreanga, of Greece.
