The German Open has switched slots with the Italian Open on the calendar and will now take place in the third week of May. The change has been made in an attempt to avoid rainy conditions in Germany.

Guillermo Vilas of Argentina gained revenge for his defeat in the Roland Garros final at the hands of Bjorn Borg 20 years ago by beating the Swede, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, on the opening day of the Compaq Senior event in Paris. In other results, France's Yannick Noah beat Sweden's Mikael Pernfors 6-4, 5-7, 10-7, while John McEnroe defeated Iran's Mansour Bahrami 6-1, 6-1, and Guy Forget beat Henri Leconte 6-3, 7-5 in an all-French encounter.
